Seeking a middleweight PHP developer with a focus and aptitude for back-end development to join our development team at our award-winning Manchester-based marketing agency.

The role: PHP / Back-end Developer

This is a role that will give you a specialist and valued role within the development team of a busy and creative marketing team with clients ranging from international blue-chip, fortune 500 to boutique SMEs. The work will range from designing complex back-end databases and systems, writing bespoke PHP-driven website model and controller layers to integrating with the HTML, JavaScript and CSS layers to create great user experiences. The role is a replacement where industry-level systems have already been adopted using version control, MVC frameworks, management of Linux server environments and multi-environment development cycles. We are particularly keen to hear from people that have experience in mobile application development such as iOS and Android (desirable but not compulsory).

Your special skills would include:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ web development experience in a commercial environment with specific back-end experience.
  • Experience of the development of large digital CMS and bespoke projects.
  • Experience of working to defined internal processes and procedures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of website building and delivery processes and systems at every level from front-end to database scheming, optimisation, server configuration and analytics reporting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of DNS management and domain management.
  • Server administration (RHEL, Debian etc) including; permission management, user management, Apache/PHP/MySQL configuration, security management, managing PHP modules (using PECL etc).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of version control systems (Subversion) including set-up and maintenance.
  • Front end development skills e.g. XHTML/HTML5/CSS2&3/AJAX/J-Query
  • Bespoke PHP development and PHP development using frameworks such as CakePHP, CodeIgniter and other MVC frameworks.
  • Knowledge of Drupal including bespoke module development (v6 and v7).
  • Knowledge of WordPress including bespoke plugin and theme development.
  • MySQL development including database design, optimisation and reporting.
  • A knowledge of server-level scripting (Python, Bash etc)
  • Experience of developing content for a mobile platform e.g. iPhone / Smartphone (desirable)


The salary

Up to £25,000 PA depending on aptitude and experience.

In addition our earn-as-you-learn scheme allows you to earn an extra £1,000 PA.
